^..."fundaplex" (from Wudl's Terms) as used here, stems from the term Fundaplex!. Let me know if you've seen it elsewhere before. Fundaplex! is a hybrid of "fundamental" and "complex." It's intended to reflect my sense that this is not an "either/or" world, but rather one in which all things are simultaneously "simple~" (fundamentally understood or experienced), and "complex" (extremely intricate, deeply layered, and difficult to understand completely). The instant one catches a glimpse of both the fundamental and complex nature of the conflict demanding one's immediate attention -- rather than passionately defending what one believes to be true, rather than giving in, giving up, or turning away from the conflict in order to find relief; instead the very concept that any personalized system of fairness should be super-imposed upon the conflict at hand gives way, the friction from the conflict melts away, and the rational mind pauses from its perceived role as the mental model of survival. A moment of clarity is captured, thus the usual inclusion of an exclamation point. So, as defined here, fundplex! could be described as:
Web retro explained...(coinage assigned by Merriam~Webster, March 27, 2002, text below mostly from the original page once found at smpotato.com). In conversation, or as part of a silly ad campaign, you'd say something like..."Hey, that's not JUST "retro"...that's "Web retro!"
Web retro is a term created to identify with and relate to the reader/surfer from a previous period of community on the World Wide Web, roughly between the mid to late 1980's and 1997, as well as to Web sites that did and still do reflect that period. It was a time when educators, students, researchers, creative individuals, and Web-curious folks moved freely across the Web, virtually meeting one another and establishing virtual relationships, sharing knowledge, and publishing meaningful information without hidden agendas. It was a time prior to the prevalence of banner ads, prior to the takeover and commercialization of the Web by corporations, the subsequent bankruptcies and abandonment of the Web by many of these companies, which left the Web in tatters. Viruses were infrequent, and surfers didn't have to wait for ads to download before reading the html text on the page they were visiting. Pop-up ads and 5 second delays in order to force the surfer to watch an animated ad prior to reaching the hyperlink he or she had just clicked were all things of the future.
Recently, I've begun noticing a return to the old Web community by many long-time end users who remember when the step up from a 14400 to a 28800 modem was hot stuff. People are finding each other again, and re-establishing old Web friendships and other relationships. THAT is what Web retro is all about. That is why I contacted the editors of Merriam~Webster, and received confirmation that the term "Web retro" was not already in use, and that coinage of the term would be assigned to yours truly. Now, I guess I can tuck my thumbs under my suspenders and declare to the world that I am indeed MISTER small potatoes! Right, and I'm so humble to boot...(first uploaded at the old Small Potatoes Multimedia site, domain name now "parked" at http://jadedbum.com.
textaplay: A device used within an editorial, essay, or short story that includes elements of a script or teleplay, but also includes Web links and brief stage setting descriptions, along with dialog, in order to invite the reader inside the author's perspective without explaining or footnoting the reader to death. C.H.I.G.E. (The Council for Hegemonic Images and Graphics Examiners) was just a silly place to go for fun back in the SPM daze, and depending on traffic, might have become a kind of clearinghouse for "Web Retro-certified" Web sites, the kind that hold true to a more trusting, naive, and unpolluted Web, when you could find your way around and download html text quickly, and make the most of the cross-platform nature of the Web without third party intrusion of any kind, no matter what kind of computer or early Web browser you were using.
